Despite its vastness, Maine is home to some impressively large towns. In fact, 48 municipalities in the state cover more than 50 square miles, which is quite remarkable for the Pine Tree State.

Curious about where the largest towns are located, I decided to compile a list of the 20 largest towns by land area in Maine. This list includes towns spread across 11 of the state's 16 counties. It's no surprise that many of these towns are in the northern region, with Aroostook, Penobscot, and Piscataquis Counties being well-represented. The Western foothills also contribute a number of sizable towns.
At the top of the list is Allagash, Maine's largest town, covering an impressive 128.6 square miles—more than any other town in the state. Each of these towns has its own distinct character, showcasing the diverse landscapes and cultures of Maine.
