Folks in Maine Can’t Agree on What to Call This Footwear
Truly, we didn’t realize that there were so many different, unique names for these boots that essentially do the same thing.
In Maine, we're accustomed to our trusty waterproof boots, especially with our generally heavier-than-average snowfall. However, snowfall aside, 2023 was an unusually wet year for our Pine Tree State.
Last year saw relentless rain through spring and summer, all leading to a December storm that was one of the wettest and most severe storms in memory.
Even for Mainers who are tough, grizzled, and used to the elements, 2023 was a year like no other.
Additionally, Maine is known for its terrain that’s as rugged as its residents.
That means there are more jobs here in Vacationland that require waterproof boots than in drier states.
That's why Mainers take their boots so seriously. Add to that the fact that we're the home of L.L. Bean and the iconic 'Bean Boots.’ In fact, one of the biggest tourist attractions in our state is just a giant boot in Freeport. Are you even a Mainer if you haven’t taken your picture in front of the L.L.Bean Flagship Store?
But, we’re not talking about ‘Bean Boots,’ we all know and recognize what those are and what they represent. That’s not in question.
However, what we are talking about is the good old-fashioned rain boot, and in Maine, when it comes to rain boots, things can get a little muddy—literally!
Some folks call them rain boots, while others swear by the term ‘mud boots.’ It's all about perspective; in a state like Maine, where mud season can be intense, these boots are essential for getting through the muck.
So, whether you're splashing in puddles or trudging through mud, these boots have got you covered! But what do we call them?
