Popular Department Store in Maine Announces Nationwide Closings
A department store with a location in Maine has announced plans to close dozens of stores across the country.

Store closings have sadly become all too common lately, as businesses continue to face challenges. This update isn’t breaking news but rather a follow-up on plans a department store first announced back in 2024.
So, which department store in Maine is planning to close several of its locations in 2025?
Macy’s is closing 66 stores across 22 states in early 2025 as part of its ongoing reorganization plan, ‘Bold New Chapter.’
Announced in 2024, this strategy involves closing 150 stores over three years to focus on sustainable growth and luxury sales.
The company will prioritize its remaining 350 Macy’s stores, along with Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury locations.
These changes aim to strengthen Macy’s profitability and refine its focus on high-end retail.
Macy’s plans to expand by opening over a dozen new Bloomingdale stores and at least 30 new Bluemercury locations, along with remodeling several Bluemercury stores within the next three years.
As part of its strategy, the company is closing underperforming Macy’s stores to focus resources on more successful locations.
CEO Tony Spring highlighted that this approach aims to enhance product offerings and customer service, where shoppers are already responding positively.
Macy’s will be closing over 60 stores nationwide in 2025. Fortunately, none of those closures will affect the South Portland location.
