I have been a homeowner for almost four years now and I still don't know the rules on many "neighborly etiquettes."

Like this one...

Should you turn your exterior Christmas lights off at night for your neighbors?

Short answer - no.

The long answer - it depends on who your neighbors are.

Using my platform, hosting 'Kira and Logan in the Morning' on 97.5 WOKQ, I decided to ask the general public their thoughts on this.

Here is the deal. I have exterior lights on my fence. Some nights I leave them on all night long. It makes the street look festive, if someone drives late they can see them, and it feels "merry."

Sometimes I turn the lights off. 1). ouch, my electric bill. 2). and this one is more important - I think it might be rude to my neighbors to leave them up all night long.

Is it?

Only a handful of people recommended turning them off at night. Those people were thinking selfishly (no, I do not mean that as negative as it sounds). They were thinking of their electric bill or their risk of a fire.

The VAST majority of people want their neighbors to leave them on all night long.

The majority of people would rather have the benefit of a festive neighborhood and sacrifice a little darkness come bedtime.

Leaving your exterior Christmas lights on all night gives late-night, or early AM, drivers the boost of joy they may need in the holiday season...

Especially when it is dark at 4 PM.
