Watch As a Whale Breaches the Water in a Maine Harbor on July 4th
A Kittery Police Officer and Harbormaster got amazing videos of a whale breaching the water on the 4th of July.
It's So Rare to See This But Even Less Likely to Be Caught On Video
How often do we kick ourselves later when we see something amazing because we didn't get a video? It happens to me all the time. But for a Kittery Police Officer and the city's Harbormaster, they had their phones out at the right moment to catch something you don't often see.

An Off-Duty Kittery Police Officer Captured Video of the Whale Breaching
Officer Danny Contois was off-duty and working the stern of the boat FV Double D on the 4th of July when he caught this sight rarely captured on video. I've watched it repeatedly and, as amazed as I am by the whale, I'm also amused by the many fish that can be seen flying through the air, saved from being lunch. You can watch the officer's video on the Kittery Police Department's Facebook page.
As I watched Officer Contois' video, I wondered how he knew to have his phone recording. Then I found similar videos, from a different angle, taken by Kittery's Harbormaster, which shows the whale cruising around the harbor before breaching the water.
The Harbormaster encouraged people to leave the whale alone as it dined on the abundance of fish in the area, for the safety of all including the whale.
Better than Fireworks
The boat was in the mooring field of Pepperell Cove Harbor, off the coast of Kittery when the whale breached. I'm guessing the fireworks were a bit of a letdown after seeing this whale pop up to say hello.
