Typically, I'm not a fan of ice or cold. With 4 kids, the idea of getting them all suited up in their winter gear to head out the door is at the very least overwhelming!

But a few years back, a very good friend of mine said "Cori, we're going to take the kids to the annual youth ice fishing day... And you're gonna love it!"

And you know what? We all did!

I attribute the fun we had to how easy the Penobscot County Conservation Association made it for someone who had never even been ice fishing before!

They pre-drill the holes for you, and provide you with the traps and bait, for free. They'll even put the traps together and place them for you if you need them to.

There are experienced sportsmen and women on hand to guide you through the process. And if your kiddos are lucky enough to catch one, they can even take their fish home!

The event is not only to inspire the next generation to take up what really is a fun winter activity but to encourage families to spend time outside together.

They even have warm beverages and light snacks, for a small donation, up in the clubhouse, should you need a break or to warm up! The only thing you really need to worry about is making sure everyone is dressed warmly!

15 Must-Have Items For Ice Fishing Season In Maine

Ice fishing is an excellent way to embrace the cold winter months in Maine. It will get you outdoors for some fresh air, it's family friendly, and a successful day could yield a tasty dinner. If you're new to the sport, we put together a list of gear you'll need for a fun, comfortable, and successful day on the ice. Some of these items are more essential than others. Some gear may not be essential at all, depending on how you plan to fish. Again, the items we listed are geared towards those who are new to ice fishing.

Before we get to the list, remember to dress appropriately for the cold weather. We didn't put warm outerwear on the list, but it's definitely a must-have. Dressing in layers is important to ensure you're warm enough throughout the day on the ice. If you start getting too warm, you can simply take a layer off. Hand warmers are also worth packing.
