Watch Maine’s Kayla Wass Rock It As She Sings with Ashley McBryde
A singer from Maine is doing big things in Nashville, like sitting on a sofa at the Grand Ole Opry, singing with Ashley McBryde.
What's Been Happening in Nashville for Kayla?
I remember Kayla Wass when she was a teenager, singing at county fairs around the state. She's always been incredibly talented so when I heard she had traveled to Nashville, I hoped that she'd find some success. But, wow, did I underestimate her.

First there was the story about performing in a benefit and meeting Patty Loveless. The amazing Ms. Loveless sought her out to introduce herself and complimented Kayla on her talent and how beautifully she had performed a Loveless song. Then, there was the Indie Showcase competition that she won, and made her way to the finals. That will be happening later this week, when Kayla will go up against some other independent artists from Nashville. I just know she's going to do great.
How Did She Meet Ashley McBryde?
But this one blew my mind and I can't watch it without getting tears in my eyes. Kayla was backstage at the Grand Ole Opry last week to watch the show and had her picture taken with Ashley McBryde before watching her perform. After the show, she decided to 'be a little bolder' than she normally would be. She asked Ashley if they could sing together. And this is what happened.
I'm so thrilled for Kayla. Talk about a Maine girl making it big in Music City. Keep being bold, Kayla, so you can have more moments just like this one.
What Happened After the Song Was Over?
Kayla says it was a dream come true.
She's been a favorite of mine for years and to get to sit beside her sing THAT song, was amazing!
After the performance was over, Ashley showed Kayla her guitar and told her the guitar's name is Dinah, and that she wrote 'Girl Going Nowhere' with it.
When I wrote the line 'when I step into the circle with a Gibson in my hand,' I wrote it with my Opry debut in mind, and this particular Gibson.
That line in 'Girl Going Nowhere,' by the way, is only included in the song when she sings at the Grand Ole Opry. On the night that Ashley McBryde was invited to become a member of the Opry, Kayla says she was there. What a thrill it must have been when Ashley told Kayla that she hopes to be there the night Kayla is invited to join. Wow!
Good luck on Thursday in the Final Showdown of the Indie Country Showdown, Kayla. Everyone in Maine will be sending positive energy your way.
