Human remains were recovered near the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on Wednesday morning.

The body was found by civilian divers doing routine barge inspections.

Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Maine State Police Investigating

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) and the Maine State Police are leading the investigation.

Human Remains Found in the Water Near Dry Dock

The remains were discovered at approximately 9:50 am in the area of Berth 14 (Dry Dock 3 facing Kittery Foreside), according to the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Remains to be Identified and Cause and Manner of Death to be Determined

The remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. An autopsy will be done to determine the identity and cause and manner of death.

“There is no danger to the public,” said the Maine Department of Public Safety.
