A 22-year-old man from Grand Falls, N.B. died Sunday in a single-vehicle crash while allegedly trying to elude police in the Drummond area.

Around 10:30 a.m., the Grand Falls Police Force attempted to stop a vehicle, which then fled from police into New Brunswick RCMP jurisdiction, according to Sgt. Jean-Pierre Bouchard of the Saint-Léonard Detachment.

A short time later, the driver lost control of the vehicle on Route 108 (Tobique Road) and crashed into a ditch, police say. Members of the Saint-Léonard RCMP attended the scene and first aid was administered before paramedics arrived.

RCMP say the driver, a 22-year-old Grand Falls man, died at the scene as a result of his injuries. Another 22-year-old man, who was a passenger in the vehicle, was transported to hospital with what were believed to be serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

An RCMP collision reconstructionist worked at the crash site Sunday and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.

Police did not release the identity of the victim. An autopsy has been scheduled to determine the driver's exact cause of death.
