- His parents, Doris and John, divorced when he and his siblings were young. Following the divorce, his mother left with their sister, and the boys were raised by their father.
- He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1971, and was stationed in Hawaii as part of the 25th Infantry division. He was honorably discharged in 1975.
- In 1982, he appeared in the film The Soldier, a film about terrorists plotting to detonate a plutonium bomb in a Saudi oil field.
- His daughter, Jenifer was killed in a car accident in 1986 when she was just 13 years old.
- He is not a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Hard to believe, but it’s true!
