If you live in Maine, or in the County for that matter, then you've no doubt heard that we are an "aging population." It almost sounds like a negative, but really it's pretty positive.

Our Community Spotlight guest this week is Joy Barresi Saucier, Executive Director of the Aroostook Agency on Aging.

We asked her what she thought about the familiar phrase that we often hear and she said,

"We are definitely aging just like the rest of America is aging at this point in time, but aging is a good thing and we want to stay aging for as long as possible."

Saucier admits that we are all aging, however, she wants to ensure that we are all aging well.

What is the Aroostook Agency on Aging?

Saucier says that the organization was a started in the early 1970s as a result of the Older American's Act, which was the first big piece of federal legislation to help support older people in our communities.

Saucier says that because they are an aging and disability resource center, they want to be the first call the community makes when enquiring about aging in the County.

Some reasons to call the center are, but not limited to:

  • Legal Services for the Elderly
  • Medicare and Insurance Counseling
  • Adult Day Services
  • Regional Transportation
  • Caregiver Education and Support,
  • Nutrition Services
  • Volunteerism

Not only does the organization have their own programs, but according to Saucier, they are also linked to other organizations throughout the community and Maine to help aid those who may need their services.

Aroostook Agency on Aging Has Relocated!

As the organization continues to expand services and build their volunteer base, they have relocated in order to help make it all happen.

Their new home is located at 260 Maine Street in Presque Isle, right across the street from Star City IGA.

The move has helped them provide more parking for clients and greater access into their building in order to make the experience easier for those they serve.
