The Caribou Police Department, in conjunction with the Maine Bureau of Highway Safety and the 2014 “DriveSober, Maine” Impaired Driving Enforcement Campaign, will be conducting a safety checkpoint on Routes 1, 89 and 161 and Bennett Drive in Caribou during the upcoming weekend of December 20th.

The “DriveSober, Maine” Program provides $10,000 in federal funds to law enforcement agencies to reimburse the overtime costs of police officers’ dedicated overtime details. The Maine Bureau of Highway Safety set a goal in the 2014 Highway Safety Plan to decrease alcohol impaired driving fatalities by 5% by December 31, 2014. This program is designed to help meet this goal.

This weekends checkpoint will ensure all motor vehicles, drivers and passengers are in compliance with State of Maine laws and make sure the roads are safe for traveling motorists this holiday weekend.

Officers will be checking for proper seat-belt use, inadequate exhaust and tires, violations of inspection and registration laws, sobriety and other safety related issues.

Stay safe out there!
