Shortly after 7 a.m., 56-year-old Janet Hilenski of Bridgewater was heading north on Route 1 in a 2003 Buick sedan when she lost control on the snow and slush covered roadway, according to Sgt. Brian Harris  Hilenski's car slid into the southbound lane and collided with a southbound 2007 Subaru being operated by 33-year-old Von Taggart of Caribou.

Hilenski sustained severe trauma in the crash and died at the scene, Sgt. Harris said. Taggart was transported to Houlton Regional Hospital and was treated and released. Both vehicles were totaled in the crash.

Route 1 in Monticello was reduced to one lane for approximately two hours while the accident was investigated and the roadway cleared.  The investigation is continuing.
