Chance Lauer was a University of Maine student who went missing on January 19, 2026.

Identification of Man Confirmed by Medical Examiner

Positive identification was confirmed by the Office of the State Medical Examiner.

Man Last Seen at Apartment Complex Where He Lived

Lauer was last seen at the Orchard Trail Apartments in Orono where he lived.

Passerby Saw Body and Reported it to the Orono Police Department

The Orono Police Department said a passerby saw his body in the retention pond near the apartment complex and reported it.

Body was Recovered from Pond by the Maine Warden Service

The Maine Warden Service assisted and his body was recovered.

Police said Nothing Suspicious About the Death

“At this point, there is nothing suspicious about the death” according to Orono PD.

Several agencies were involved in the search and recovery including volunteers, the University of Maine, the Maine Warden Service and the Orono Police Department.
