According to the World Population Review, of the state of Maine's over 1.405 million residents, over half the women in this state and 21% of the men will experience domestic violence in their lifetime.

"Domestic violence can happen to anyone of any age and can occur in both heterosexual and same-sex relationships. Domestic violence can also include violence against children, parents, or the elderly and can take on several forms, including physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual abuse."

To that degree, there's a new initiative coming to Maine's Bureau of Motor Vehicles that hopes to raise awareness of this substantial problem, and offer folks a path to resources that might help folks currently suffering from Domestic Violence Abuse.

This week, the Maine Secretary of State's office announced that it will utilize the state's 13 BMV branch offices as a way to get this information out, via pamphlets, flyers and posters.

Finding Our Voices, a Camden-based Maine nonprofit committed to commitment to providing Maine's domestic abuse survivors with support services, will be providing the display material for each branch.

The Secretary of State says she hopes the displays will catch the eye of folks visiting the different the BMV offices and as such, help spread the word about the help and services available to Mainers.
