Insider Monkey compiled its list of the 15 best places to retire in Maine by consulting various sources, including their own list of 15 Cities in the Northeast to Retire on $3000 a Month, Niche, The Travel, Movoto, NewHomeSource, Planswell, and Kiplinger. Insider Monkey ranked these places based on factors such as cost of living, livability scores, and median house prices.

To further deep-dive into Insider Monkey’s methodology, they used their own cost of living index, which covers housing, utilities, food, transport, taxes, and healthcare.
Each place was assigned a cumulative score, with livability scores given double weightage. In case of equal scores, the cost of living index was used as a tie-breaker.
