The new program kicks off with a series of meetings this month to introduce the program and recruit interested parents to be leaders. While MSAD 1 is seeking to determine if there is sufficient interest in football to consider a high school team, Aroostook Huskies is looking to build on its current program.

Interested adults are encouraged to attend one of these informational meetings. All meetings run from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

  •    Monday, April 18 at Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center
  •    Tuesday, April 19 at NMCC (Peter Hunt Multi-Media Classroom)
  •    Monday, April 25 at Caribou Inn and Convention Center
  •    Tuesday, April 26 at Caribou Rec Center

Once parent leaders are identified, they will be trained in May and player recruiting will begin. The flag football season is expected to run during June and July.

Taylor DeFelice, one of the organizers of the venture, said that flag football was the obvious choice to introduce the sport to this age group.  “All the research and data strongly support the conclusion that tackle football is probably an unsafe game for kids under the age of 13," DeFelice said. "Flag football provides all the education, action and fun without the risks of excessive contact.”

If you’re unable to attend any of these meetings but are still interested in getting involved, go to the Huskies’ website at AroostookFootball.org and click on the “Contact Us” link.
