A 25-year-old woman was seriously injured Thursday evening when the car she was driving went off the road and struck a pole in St. John Plantation in northern Aroostook County.

Maine State Police say Shelby Taggett of Allagash was traveling west on Route 161 around 7:20 p.m. when she apparently swerved to avoid a moose that was in the roadway. Her 2014 Ford Taurus crossed the center line and veered onto the left shoulder.

Taggett over-corrected, causing the car to skid out of control and off the right side off the road, according to Sgt. Jeffrey Clark. The car hit a utility pole and came to rest in the tree line. State Police say the utility pole was broken and the power lines were downed.

Taggett was transported by ambulance to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent with what police called "serious but non-life threatening injuries."
