A 22-year-old man was seriously injured Tuesday morning when his vehicle was struck by a tractor trailer on the Maine Turnpike in Saco.

State police said the car was involved in a crash earlier when it struck a guardrail and came to rest in the roadway.  It was then hit by a truck.

Maine Public Safety spokesman, Stephen McCausland said:

The impact drove the car underneath the cab of the tractor trailer and the car’s driver was pinned inside. The two vehicles came to rest, just off the breakdown lane.  Wreckers were used to lift the truck off the car, in order to free the operator, as fire department personnel used extrication equipment.

It was raining when the crash took place about 5 am, at the exit 36 southbound ramp. That exit ramp was closed for 3½ hours.

The driver of the car, 22-year-old Abdirahman Mohamed from Portland, is being treated at MMC

The truck driver is 46-year-old Mark Pierce of Standish who was not injured.

The tractor portion of the truck is owned by Hutchins Trucking of South Portland and it was hauling a loaded Hannaford Supermarket trailer.
