RCMP say a 33-year-old woman has died after being struck along the shoulder of the Trans-Canada Highway near Havelock, N.B., while helping another motorist who had gone into the ditch.

Shortly before 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Riverview RCMP responded to a crash involving a moving van that had gone off Highway 2 westbound and rolled over in the ditch, according to Sgt. Patrick Tardif.

Two other motorists stopped to provide assistance to the driver of the moving van, who was injured in the crash.

Police say a transport truck travelling in the same direction attempted to move over into the left-hand lane, away from the vehicles on the right side of the highway, but jack-knifed causing the trailer to strike the two vehicles that had stopped to provide assistance.

The two drivers, a man and a woman, who were standing outside of their vehicles, were both struck.

The woman, originally from Burton, N.B., but who had been living in Alberta, died at the scene as a result of her injuries. The driver of the other vehicle and the driver of the moving truck were taken to hospital with serious injuries. The driver of the transport truck was not badly hurt, Sgt. Tardif said.

Traffic was diverted from the area for several hours overnight. The investigation is ongoing, although weather conditions are considered to be a factor. It was snowing at the time.
