United Express Takes to the Skies….Finally

After a month of being without an air carrier, the Presque Isle International Airport (formerly Northern Maine Regional Airport) saw its first flight under its new carrier take off.

Company officials, local dignitaries, curiosity seekers and, of course, passengers, were at the airport at 5:00 a.m. Monday to launch the inaugural flight of United Express from Presque Isle to Newark, New Jersey. There were several speakers and refreshments were available. The first flight out of Presque Isle for United Airlines took off about 6:00 a.m.

It was decided back in March that United would be the new carrier serving northern Maine, replacing Pen Air. The contract with Pen Air was scheduled to end on June 30, but Pen Air pulled out a month early.

United will provide 12 nonstop round trips per week to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) using a 50-seat jet aircraft.
