The University of Maine at Fort Kent recently put the wraps on the month of October with a “Pink Dance” put on by members of the Student Senate to raise awareness and funds for cancer care.

According to Rajay Maragh, UMFK student senate member, over 110 students attended the dance, and more than $170 was raised from their donations. The money goes to the Edgar J. Paradis Cancer Fund to help members of the community battling this terrible disease.

The event was put on as one of the many programs hosted by the Residence Life & Leadership team. UMFK encourages students to create and attend events such as these to build lasting relationships within the community, promote leadership among peers, and foster a positive learning environment for everyone to share.

Maragh explained, “We decided to do this event during October because where we’re from, breast cancer awareness is a big deal. We wanted to bring something new to UMFK and have it be meaningful to the community."

Students also had the opportunity to experience a dance in a different type of social setting. The hope is to grow the event more next year and hopefully offer cancer screening information to participants.
