Trisha Yearwood and Kelly Clarkson pair two of the strongest female voices in contemporary music for Yearwood's new song, "Workin' on Whiskey."

"Workin' on Whiskey" is a song about "a situation you want to change, but can't," Yearwood says in a press release. The track centers around a dirge-like, bluesy guitar figure, and Yearwood gives an emotional performance as she sings of a relationship she just can't seem to let go of.

Every time she thinks it's over, she sings, "I start seeing things I shouldn't see / And wanting things I shouldn't be / And wrestling with the memory that won't let me go / I've tried and tried to give you up / But once you've had the strong stuff, nothing else will be enough / So I'll be workin' on whiskey."

Yearwood's solo vocal performance carries the first two verses and the first chorus, and Clarkson joins her to provide a scorching harmony part in the second chorus, giving the back end of the song a thrilling lift as the instrumentation also builds to a climax.

Jessica Mitchell, Dave Thompson and Patricia Conroy co-wrote "Workin' on Whiskey," and Yearwood enlisted her longtime producer, Garth Fundis, to oversee the track. It's the opening song of Yearwood's forthcoming album, Every Girl, which is due on Aug. 30. Clarkson also appears on a track titled "Tell Me Something I Don't Know."

Yearwood will hit the road in support of the album on her Every Girl on Tour, which kicks off Oct. 3 in Nashville and runs through Dec. 8, when it wraps in Naples, Fla.
