Maine Got Trashed Over the Holiday Weekend
The beach is synonymous with the 4th of July. It's the perfect venue for friends and family to congregate and spend the day celebrating America's birthday. Unfortunately and because of this, the following day has received a title that many would like to "throw away." The 5th of July is infamously known as the dirtiest day for beaches.
If you were to visit the beach the day after Independence Day, you are apt to see the remnants of lit fireworks scattered across the sand in addition to plastics, cans, bottles, cigarette butts, and more - not just along Maine coastlines, but nationwide.
Thank goodness for groups like Surfrider Foundation.
The Surfrider Foundation is dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches, for all people, through a powerful activist network.
Surfrider Foundation Helped Clean Up Old Orchard Beach, Maine
Surfrider Foundation cleaned up over 100,000 pounds of trash from beaches nationwide. To put that number into perspective, annually, the nonprofit organization that began 40 years ago in Malibu, California cleans up 250,000 pounds of trash. July 5th truly is the dirtiest day for beaches.
This year, the Maine chapter of Surfrider Foundation cleaned up Old Orchard Beach the morning following the festivities of July 4th.
Volunteer For Surfrider Foundation's Maine Chapter's Next Event
Surfrider Foundation is always looking for donations and volunteers and it is very easy to get involved. For interested Mainers, it's as simple as going to their website and submitting your information via a form provided online (just click here for quick access). You can also email maine@surfrider.org.
Their next event is July 20th from 10am until 3:30pm, and in addition to feeling fulfilled after participating in a beach clean-up for your community, there is also fun that comes along with being involved with Surfrider. Following this particular event, there will be surfing, volleyball, music and camaraderie.
