As winter closes in, here's when and how often you can expect snow and snowstorms in key cities and towns across Maine.

Five of the last six winters have been among the snowiest on record at the National Weather Service office in Caribou.

Today's storm is a big one, but it's nowhere close to Maine's all-time snowfall record!

A major winter storm is expected to hit northern and central Maine late Thursday, dumping up to a foot of snow by the time it winds down Friday.

There is some snow in the forecast for overnight into early Tuesday but Mainers shouldn't be surprised. Last Memorial Day weekend, the northern Maine town of Presque Isle recorded 5.2 inches of snow on May 23, 2015. However, that's not the latest recorded snowfall in Maine.

A powerful storm that zeroed in on northern Aroostook County Wednesday dumped more than a foot of snow in some places.  Here's a quick rundown of the totals:

On the heels of a significant snow event Sunday that left 6 - 10 inches across much of Aroostook County, a winter storm is expected to hit the area even harder on Tuesday.
