Rascal Flatts say that their most recent single, "Back to Life," won't be part of a traditional studio album, but they've got something else in the works. The trio of Jay DeMarcus, Gary LeVox and Joe Don Rooney says that a series of covers songs released one at a time is something they've been talking about for more than a decade -- and now might be the perfect time to pursue that dream.

"I think our years of cutting full-length albums are on hold right now," DeMarcus says in an interview with Taste of Country Nights, adding that they want to mix it up a little. "... We may do a country cover batch, and we may do a hair metal band batch of songs ... kind of not have any parameters and worry about the next three-and-a-half minutes on the radio. It's kind of fun and liberating."

They've already cut covers of Huey Lewis and the News, Foreigner and Kenny Loggins, but they have plans for more, including perhaps a Brian McKnight cover that might even feature McKnight himself. “We’re kind of going single-by-song,” Rooney says in an interview with Billboard, adding that a singles-based release model “might be the new paradigm for Flatts for some time in the future. I don’t know how far that will be, but for now that’s kind of how we’re thinking.”

LeVox says that the new approach is a "breath of fresh air" for the band, allowing them to focus on releasing one "spectacular" song after another.
