With the changing of the season comes cooler weather, and we can’t forget what’s lurking behind these brisk autumn days… old man winter.

You never know what kind of weather to expect here in Northern Maine, and I like to be prepared for the worst when it comes to winter. So, I've come up with 5 winter readiness tips for you.

  • Insulate against drafts. You don’t want to heat the outdoors, so make sure your windows and doors are sealed tight, and maybe even cover them in plastic. At my house, we even put banking up to help keep the heat in.
  • Take care of plants and bushes. Many people have shrubs outside their homes that they place wooden shades around to protect them from the heavy snow.
  • Clean your chimney. I’m sure many of us have experienced a chimney fire in our lifetime. Not fun, by the way! So this one is pretty self explanatory.
  • Preventing frozen pipes. Having your pipes freeze is a common occurrence here in the County; it happened to me several times last winter. But, the good thing is that it can be prevented just by leaving your water running in your sink just ever-so-slightly on those nights that are well below zero.
  • Test and clean smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. It may just save your life!

We all know the winters are long here in our area, so hopefully these helpful tips will save you some time… but they may also add to your “Honey-Do List”.
