Officials fanned out Wednesday evening for a "point-in-time" homeless count.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires homeless service providers who receive federal funding to conduct an annual estimate of the homeless population on a given night each January.

Federal officials say Maine's homelessness has remained flat since 2010. Based on last year's data, Maine experienced a double-digit decline in chronic homelessness.
