A practical nursing program established to address the need to expand Maine’s long-term care workforce is proving to be successful.

Back in 2017 Northern Maine Community College received approval for the establishment of this program and the first group of fifteen students from southern Aroostook will complete the program in December.

In October, NMCC begins a second practical nursing group for up to 32 students. Enrolled students will receive free tuition and course fees. Students who need pre-requisite courses will be able to take advantage of a compressed schedule to meet the general education requirements. Students who have already completed general education courses will begin the required nursing courses in March.

This unique nursing certificate program is one of only two programs in the entire state and the only one offered by a public college.

The program is funded by a grant from Maine Quality Centers “Put ME to Work” and additional support is received from Aroostook healthcare providers.
