New England is Home to One of the Loneliest Cities in America
One of the definitions of lonely is to be "without companions and solitary". New data from the Chamber of Commerce shows that the average age for marriage is getting older across the United States. Men are marrying at around age 30, and women around age 28. That means a lot of people are spending a lot of time alone. The Chamber of Commerce compiled data and found that one of the loneliest cities in America happens to be right in New England.
Out of 170 cities in America that were surveyed, Boston, Massachusetts, was revealed to be one of the loneliest in the country. It's the only New England city to be in the Top 30 for loneliness. For clarification, only cities with at least 150,000 residents were considered for this survey. Most of the major cities in New England don't match that qualification.
So what makes Boston so lonely? It's the single female population. Boston has one of the highest percentage of female residents living alone in the entire county. Nearly one-quarter of females living in Boston live alone. Compare that to the single male population in the city, where only 15% live alone. It's a rather large disparity for a city of nearly 700,000 people.
While Boston may be the loneliest city in New England, it still compares well to the cities that topped the Chamber of Commerce's list. Nearly 50% of the residents in Washington D.C. live alone. The same goes for St. Louis, Missouri, with 47.5% of the population living alone. Boston may be lonely, but it's not as lonely as some cities across America.
