Philpott's car had been found in the Parkman Mountain parking lot off Route 198 in Mount Desert on Jan. 13. Searches were conducted for several days and then resumed this month when weather and ground conditions improved.

Late Friday morning, three volunteers and three search dogs found a backpack about 40 feet from a carriage road. In the mid-afternoon, human remains were found 170 feet down a hill from where the backpack was discovered. The area is a steep downslope from the Around-Mountain carriage road in a heavily forested area northwest of Parkman Mountain.

“We appreciate the efforts of the volunteers from Maine Search and Rescue Dogs in conducting the search,” Acadia National Park Superintendent Kevin Schneider said in a news release. “We also thank the Maine Warden Service, Maine Forest Service, Maine Association for Search and Rescue, and Mount Desert Island Search and Rescue for their time and expertise over the past three months.”

Philpott's body and effects are being examined at the Maine Medical Examiner's Office.
