His campaign says Michaud, who'd formed an exploratory committee, will make a statement Thursday afternoon at the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston.

Michaud has already been raising money to challenge Republican Gov. Paul LePage, who's seeking re-election. Michaud faces a primary challenge from Steve Woods of Yarmouth.

Also in the race is independent Eliot Cutler.

Michaud is a five-term congressman. He had said when he announced his exploratory committee that Maine needs someone who can restore civility in the Maine State House, a veiled reference to the blunt-spoken LePage.
