Did you know suicide is the second leading cause of death among Maine youth and adults ages 10 to 35? Maine's rates of suicide death have increased by 27 percent from 1999 through 2016. In fact, suicide deaths have increased nationally in every state except Nevada.

According to an article in the Press Herald, in 2014, Maine had 220 reported suicides, a rate of 16.54 suicides per 100,000 residents. The national rate was 13.41 per 100,000 people. That put Maine above the national average for suicides.

Maine teamed up with the Sweetser Training Institute and now there is a new portal which provides free online training in suicide risk screening, intervention, treatment and support.

The Maine Crisis Hotline is 1-888-568-1112.

The National suicide prevention hotline is 1-800-273-8255.
