One of Maine's most iconic sandwiches is getting the royal treatment it rightfully deserves. All hail the lobster roll!

The popular foodie site Allrecipes recently dove into the magical world of sandwiches. I mean, who wouldn't want to? The sandwich is one of the greatest food creations ever invented—two slices of bread with virtually unlimited possibilities in between. It just might be the most versatile meal on the planet. But enough about sandwiches in general—back to the article.

Allrecipes put together a list of what it considers the most legendary regional sandwiches in America.

Only 15 sandwiches earned a spot on this prestigious list, including Maine's most famous creation. According to Allrecipes, the lobster roll is nothing short of legendary.

What Makes the Lobster Roll so Special?

Of course it is. The lobster roll has everything an iconic sandwich should have: a buttery, toasted split-top bun stuffed with fresh-picked lobster meat and finished with either butter or mayonnaise, a squeeze of lemon, and maybe a little lettuce or herbs. Simple, yet absolutely perfect.

One of the best things about lobster rolls is how easy they are to find in Maine. They're not just served at seafood restaurants—you'll spot them at lobster shacks, food trucks, variety stores, specialty markets, supermarkets, high-end restaurants, and yes, even the gas station near my house.

What is the History of the Lobster Roll?

While they might have been perfected here, the lobster roll isn't actually from Maine. The sandwich was first created in Milford, Connecticut, in 1929. However, it quickly made its way through New England, where it ultimately became a Maine staple—just another sign of how Maine reigns supreme in New England.

Congratulations to the beloved lobster roll for bringing even more national recognition to Maine. It's just another reminder of how fortunate we are to call this food-loving state home.
