The Maine Department of Transportation won't use a type of road sealant on travel lanes after the product was linked to several accidents in the state.

Spokesman Paul Merrill says there are enough questions about the effectiveness and safety of a surface fog seal that the state will not use it again.

The Morning Sentinel reports that Maine suspended use of the sealant in October when the publication highlighted the risks associated with its use.

Officials say surface fog sealant is a diluted asphalt that's used to fill cracks and extend the life of pavement.
