True Story of Survival on Mount Katahdin

Sylvester Stallone produced, "Lost on a Mountain in Maine," which is based on the true story of Donn Fendler.

Donn was 12 years old when he was separated from his family and became lost on Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park in Maine.

For 9 days in July of 1939, he was without food or shelter of any kind.

The Movie Was Not Shot in Maine

According to an interview with the actor who portrays a young Donn Fendler, Luke David Blumm, by WHOM's Lori & Jeff, the film was shot in New York, not in Maine.  The terrain is similar, so it looks like it could be Baxter State Park.

At the time of the interview, Luke had not yet met Sylvester Stallone.  (I guess Producers don't hang around the set.  Who knew?)

Luke did state that there were helicopters who shot actual shots of Katahdin, so at least those sights are accurate.

Luke David Blumm has never hiked Katahdin himself.  He has read the book and listened to a lot of interviews about Donn Fendler, but he hasn't made it up the mountain yet, although he really does want to at some point.

Mount Katahdin is a Difficult Climb

The Summit of Mount Katahdin is the end of the Appalachian Trail, and the trek is really not for beginners.  Some people say that anyone can do it, however, the entire trek will take you between eight and 10 hours.

To give you some perspective, Mount Washington in New Hampshire, which is the highest peak in the Northeast, is easier to hike than Katahdin.

Having said that, if you are considering climbing the mountain, don't let anything stop you.  Summiting a mountain gives you the feeling that you have conquered the world and I suppose, you have.

Have you ever climbed Katahdin?
