Jimmie Allen Looks Back on ‘American Idol’ Rejection: ‘You Can Rise From the Ashes’
Jimmie Allen is one of the fastest-rising stars in country music now, but he's had his share of rejection along the road to stardom. In a new post to social media on Saturday (May 11), Allen shared a clip of the time he was cut from American Idol, adding an encouraging message about not giving up.
Allen made it to the Hollywood rounds on Idol in 2011, but washed out of the competition before any of his performances could ever air on television. In the clip above, then-Idol judge Jennifer Lopez informs him that he didn't make the cut into the Top 24, and he takes the news philosophically.
"It hurts," he admits as he heads out of the building. "But I've got to keep going."
"Someone telling us 'No' doesn’t stop our dream...we stop our dream," Allen writes to accompany the clip. "Never stop fighting, never stop dreaming. Believe in yourself, you can rise from the ashes."
Jimmie Allen Is "Unwell" and We're Better for It:
Allen was already no stranger to struggle before his Idol experience; he lived out of his car when he first moved to Nashville from Delaware. In 2013 he appeared in a Taylor Swift commercial for Diet Coke while continuing to work on his own career, but Allen's persistence paid off big in the end.
His debut single, "Best Shot," reached No. 1 on Billboard's US Country Airplay chart in 2018, followed by the release of "Make Me Want To" in early 2019.
Ironically, his Idol experience paid off all those years later when he was invited to go on tour with Scotty McCreery, whom he met in 2011 during his run on the show. McCreery went on to win the season that Allen was cut from.
Allen will hit the road with Rascal Flatts on select dates of their 2019 Summer Playlist Tour, which launches on May 16. His fast-rising career led Taste of Country to name him as one of our RISERS for 2019. See his exclusive RISERS performance of "Make Me Want To" below.
