Freeport, Maine, Deemed Most ‘Eccentric’ Town in State
If you look up the definition of the word eccentric, you'll find something like this: "unconventional and slightly strange". That phrase could be used to describe a lot of different villages and towns throughout Maine if we are being honest about it.
But when you start to think more critically, there is a particularly town in the state that fits that definition rather perfectly. A town that is known by many as a shopping destination but also as a beer destination. It's also the home to an odd geological phenomenon as well as one of the most gorgeous parks in the state.
Of course, we're describing Freeport, Maine. It was recently deemed to be the most 'eccentric' town in Maine courtesy of World Atlas' list of the 7 most eccentric towns throughout New England.
World Atlas didn't use any scientific data to come up with their conclusion. They just visited Freeport and decided that the town was a little unconventional. It's hard to argue.
Freeport is anchored by L.L. Bean's massive flagship store. That area is surrounded by quant shops as well as national retailers, many of whom operate in unconventional buildings atypical of where you'd normal find them.
Freeport is home to the one of the most eccentric McDonald's locations in the world. It's one of the few McDonald's where you could sit down and have a fireside chat over fries and a Big Mac.
Freeport is also home to the Desert of Maine. The odd geological happening has been a tourist attraction for years, bringing people onto the glacial sands that seem woefully out of place surrounded by thick forest.
So is Freeport truly the most eccentric town in Maine? It certainly fits.
