My Baggage compared all 50 states using five equally weighted measures: median asking rent, average fall temperature, rainfall, flight cancellations and storm-related property damage.

Using rental market data and federal weather and transportation records, the company ranked states on each measure and averaged those rankings, favoring lower costs, less rain, fewer cancellations, less storm damage, and warmer temperatures.

Maine ranked as the seventh-worst state for a fall move, despite having one of the lower median asking rents among the bottom 10 states at $1,694.

Among those 10 states, Maine had the second-lowest average fall temperature at 46.8 degrees, behind Alaska, and averaged 11.66 inches of rainfall during the season.

For anyone planning a fall move to Maine, cooler temperatures and rain can mean taking extra steps to keep furniture, boxes, and other belongings dry during loading and unloading.

Shorter daylight hours also leave less time to complete an outdoor move before dark.

The ranking focuses on costs, weather, and travel conditions associated with a fall move, rather than Maine’s overall appeal as a place to live.

Factors such as job opportunities, schools, and proximity to family were not among the five measures used.
