A 49-year-old Houlton man is facing weapons charges after allegedly firing a gun in a residential area during a dispute Tuesday evening.

The Houlton Police Department received a report around 6 p.m. of a disturbance at 83 Court Street involving the possible discharge of a firearm.

According to the investigation, Tony A. Smith of Houlton and the complainant were engaged in a verbal dispute throughout the day over property and other issues. Police Chief Tim DeLuca said another dispute late in the day became verbally threatening resulting in the firing of a firearm.

Police say the 9mm handgun was only fired once.

Smith was arrested and charged with Criminal Threatening with a Dangerous Weapon, Reckless Conduct and Discharge of a Firearm near a Dwelling.

He was later transported to the Aroostook County Jail where he was processed and bailed for the charges. Bail was set at $500.

Maine State Police, The Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office, Maine Warden Service and U.S. Border Patrol Agents also assisted in the investigation.
