‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Will Be the Last For the Current Lineup
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is on track for a great upheaval. Their grand vision for ‘Phase Three’ is nearly upon us, as the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War films position the deep roster of heroes for a sweeping change to the status quo. And director James Gunn plans on reshaping his Guardians of the Galaxy franchise along with it. Though he hasn’t made his plans clear, the filmmaker has already admitted that the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will “conclude the story of this iteration of the Guardians.” Today, in a new item at The Hollywood Reporter, Gunn hinted at his plans for the future.
The THR item confirms that Guardians 3 will end the current lineup of Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, Groot, and Nebula. The THR item then goes on to speculate that the crew of Ravagers introduced in the most recent installment could make for a perfectly serviceable replacement, headed as it is by the box-office-proven Sylvester Stallone. Technically these characters were the Guardians of the Galaxy in the original comics, going on far-out adventures that included everything from time travel to alternate dimensions, though Gunn stated that he has no interest in tampering with the metaphysical. (“That is not something we’re dealing with,” he said.)
But the Ravagers will play some kind of role, that’s for certain. Gunn keeps his quotes nice and noncommittal, but the most substantive thing he says is that “I’m definitely interested in the direction that these characters are headed and their role in the Marvel Universe.” Maybe a cosmic superteam obsessed with the culture of the ’90s this time?
