Five months ago James Flanagan was celebrating his 72nd birthday though he won’t live to celebrate his 73rd. He died of a sudden heart attack, but before he passed away he wrote a deeply personal letter to his five grandchildren. Flanagan’s daughter shared her father’s words of wisdom so the rest of us can get inspired by this simple man too.

In his heartwarming letter, Flanagan writes: ‘Everyone in the world is just an ordinary person. Some people may wear fancy hats or have big titles or (temporarily) have power and want you to think they are above the rest. Don't believe them.’

‘Practice the Irish proverb: Moi an olge agus tiocfaidh sí "Praise the child and she will flourish.’

In his 72 years of living life, Flanagan had a lot to pass on his children and their children. Reading his letter, I feel inspired to live life to the fullest no matter how  cliche it might sound.

He ends his letter with: “Be grateful. There is an Irish saying: "This is a day in our lives, and it will not come again." Live every day with this in mind.’
