French Films Coming to UMFK Campus

The University of Maine Fort Kent Campus will be playing host to a French film festival.

The Tournées French Film Festival will begin on Tuesday, November 7th and will run through Thursday, November 16th. All films will be shown at the University of Maine Fort Kent’s Nadeau Hall conference room.

The festival will feature a series of six different contemporary French language films over a two-week period, all by women directors. The films will be shown in the original language, with English subtitles. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.

UMFK’s Associate Professor of French and festival organizer Dr. Nicole Boudreau said, “I’m very excited to be hosting our third annual Tournées Festival at UMFK this Fall, especially since we will be featuring films made by women. A recent study at USC Annenberg shows that there are nearly 24 male directors for every female director in Hollywood; it’s so important that these voices be heard.”

Here's the schedule of films to be shown:

Tuesday, November 7 at 6 p.m.

Mustang: The film is set in a remote Turkish village and depicts the lives of five young orphaned sisters and challenges they face growing up as girls in a conservative society. Rated PG-13, 94 min. 

Thursday, November 9 at 6 p.m.              

If You Don’t, I Will: The film strikes an engaging tone of melancholic humor through its portrait of a French marriage slowly falling to pieces. Not rated, 102 min. 

Saturday, November 11 at 6 p.m. 

Kung Fu Master: A French film that tells the story of a love affair between a 40-year-old woman and a 15-year-old boy. Rated R, 80 min. 

Sunday, November 12 at 3 p.m. 

Girlhood: The film portrays a teen’s life in the Paris projects. Not rated, 112 min. 

Tuesday, November 14 at 6 p.m. 

Fidelio: The film reveals a thought provoking investigation of faithfulness and the nature of love and desire. Not Rated, 97 min. 

Thursday, November 16 at 6 p.m. 

As I Open My Eyes: A music-filled film is set few months before the revolution in Tunisia, an 18 year-old young woman has a passion for life and sings in a political rock band. Her mother, knowing the dangers of Tunisia, wants her to pursue a career as a doctor.  Not Rated, 102 min.
