Fort Knox Prospect, Maine

Standing strong for 150 years, Fort Knox in Prospect, Maine is the largest historic fort in the state. What was once established to protect the Penobscot River Valley against British naval attack in 1844 is now a hot tourist attraction and scenic grounds for Mainer's summer picnics.

Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory

As part of the historic site, the Penobscot Narrows Bridge & Observatory offers 360-views of the Penobscot River and Bay and the western mountains of Maine. According to their website, the observatory is taller than the Statue of Liberty and is the tallest public bridge observatory in the entire world.

I have personally never been, so when I heard that fact I wanted to check it out immediately. Since they aren't open quite yet, here's a walking tour to get an idea of what it's like:

Fort Knox Historic Site Reopening May 2022

While the grounds are accessible all year round, the fort and observatory are closed during the colder months. The site welcomes thousands of tourists every summer and provides a unique and interesting visit for locals who want to check out the wonders of our state.

They recently posted on Facebook letting the public know both the fort and observatory will be open for the 2022 season on May 1 with some new improvements made for the new season.

Fort Knox Hauntings

An old historic fort that stationed troops during the Spanish-American war isn't even the most interesting part about this Maine wonder but rather that the fort is alleged to be haunted.

Throughout the summer and fall, you can find events centered around this spookiness with Ghosts of Fort Knox Tours, Paranormal Gatherings, and overnight Ghost Camps.

Coming up this May with the opening is a chance to experience firsthand the hauntings of Fort Knox. Ghost Hunts USA is hosting an overnight ghost hunt where you can fully immerse yourself in the paranormal activity of the fort. Check out more info about it here.
