GET READY! The First Two Major Snowstorms in Maine of 2024 Could Be Coming
If you received brand-new snowshoes for Christmas, you might soon have the perfect opportunity to break them in.
Just a friendly reminder: The Farmers’ Almanac predicted a "Cold, Snowy" year for Maine.
The Winter 2023-2024 forecast from this year's Farmers' Almanac for Maine emphasized "Below-average temperatures and numerous snowstorms, sleet, ice, and rain," particularly in January, February, and extending into March for Maine and Northern New England.
With news of the potential arrival of two consecutive snowstorms, the accuracy of the Almanac's forecast seems to be gaining more credibility by the day.
Meteorologist Jason Nappi from NEWS CENTER Maine shared a snowfall map of upcoming weather models on his social media, accompanied by the caption, "You like #snow right?"
Nappi states, “Back-to-back snowstorms are on track over the next 10 days,” adding, “Typically, I wouldn’t give much airtime to weather computer modeling about a week away from a storm, but the pattern favors a big snowstorm this time around.”
“There are two timeframes I’m watching for waves of energy riding along the jet stream. The first is Jan. 7 and the second is Jan. 10. At this time high pressure would be in the correct position for an all-snow solution in the entire state of Maine on Jan. 7 thanks to cold air damning from the polar north wind.”
“For Jan. 10 I can see a more powerful storm with more moisture coming out of the Gulf of Mexico, but we still need a strong area of high pressure and North Atlantic blocking to keep the cold air locked in place. Remains to be seen if that will be the case, but I’m leaning toward that being a big obstacle for storm No. 2.”
Nappi refrains from providing specific snowfall numbers at this time but expresses confidence that winter sports will be in full swing by mid-January this year.
We'll continue to keep you informed as updates on the potential storms heading our way become available in the Pine Tree State!
