Fort Fairfield Fire Chief Vince Baldwin says the blaze broke out around 8 p.m. on the Old East Limestone Road, just off Route 1A. The home belonged to Doug and Tracy Raymond, who lived there with their son.

Baldwin said the family and their dog made it out safely. Two pet cats were still missing Monday morning.

The Fort Fairfield Fire Department was assisted by crews from Limestone and Caribou. In all, about 25 firefighters battled the blaze Sunday night, Baldwin said. Crews remained at the scene until shortly before midnight. The home, which is insured, was considered a total loss.

Fire marshals will be at the home on Monday to try to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire.

Ann Kim of the American Red Cross said a Disaster Action Team was working the family to ensure that they have food, a safe place to sleep and other essentials.
