Fort Fairfield Police and Fire Departments were called to a single-vehicle accident on the Presque Isle Road around 7:00 a.m.

Police Chief Shawn Newell said the caller reported a car was on fire and the driver was still inside. The car, a 2002 Chevrolet Impala was traveling toward Fort Fairfield at the time of the crash.

Emergency responders arrived and found the lone occupant had been removed from the burning car by nearby residents who heard the crash. The driver, 27-year-old Annette Lopez of Fort Fairfield suffered serious injuries in the crash, Newell said.

Crown Ambulance transported Lopez to The Aroostook Medical Center and she was flown to a Bangor hospital in serious condition. No updates on her condition have been given.

Fort Fairfield emergency responders were assisted at the scene by the Presque Isle Police and Fire Department. Chief Newell would like to reach out to the bystanders who helped Lopez out of her vehicle and asks they contact the Fort Fairfield Police Department at 472-3808.

Chief Newell said, "The person or people who placed themselves in harm’s way by helping Ms. Lopez out of her vehicle while it was engulfed in flames need to be recognized. There is no doubt in my mind this would have been an entirely different investigation had they not been there to help her."

Officer Dale Keegan is leading the investigation to determine the cause of the crash.
