It was a tough night for UMaine basketball teams as the women lost at Purdue 56-33 while the men were losing a tight one point game at Holy Cross 76-75.Facing former UMaine coach Sharon Versyp the Maine women struggled to generate any offense with only 14 first half points and no double digit scorers in the game.

The Bears committed 17 turnovers and had the ball stolen away 9 times. Purdue was able to convert those turnovers into 13 points while shooting 48 percent on the night.

Sigi Koizar led the 9-5 Bears with 9 points. Bella swan and Mikaela Gustafsson each chipped in with 8 points. The Boilermakers were able to contain Liz Wood by holding her to just 3 points and 3 rebounds.

Maine will get a few days off for the holidays before returning to the floor next Thursday at North Carolina.

The Maine men fell short in search of their third win of the season by dropping a 76-75 decision to Holy Cross. The game was close from the opening tip but the Bears could not overtake the Crusaders.

Aaron Calixte drained a 3-pointer at the end of the game to cut the lead to one point, but Holy Cross was able to inbound the ball and let time run out not allowing Maine for a chance at the game winner.

The Bears put 5 players in double digits with Troy Reid-Knight leading the way with 15, Kevin Little and Lavar Harewood each added 12.

Taking care of the ball was an issue for the Bears once again as the Crusaders were able to score 21 points off 23 Maine turnovers.

Maine is now 2-9 as it wraps up the first semester. Next up is a game at home against Quinnipiac next Tuesday.
