Maine State Police say 73-year-old Arthur Fawthrop of Endicott, New York was driving north on I-95 in Sherman late Tuesday afternoon when he fell asleep at the wheel. His wife, Ellen, was a passenger in the car.

The couple’s 2004 Hyundai went off the left side of the highway and struck the end of the guardrail, according to Sgt. Jeffrey Clark. The car continued into the median, rolled over and came to rest in a brook. The vehicle then caught fire, setting some nearby trees on fire, Clark said.

Mr. and Mrs. Fawthrop were transported by ambulance to Houlton Regional Hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released.

State Trooper Carman Lilley investigated the crash. Patten Ambulance Service, Patten Fire Department, Medway Fire Department, and the Maine Forest Service also responded to the crash and fire.

Fawthrop is a retired pastor who once served at churches in New Brunswick.
