Here are 5 truths about Patty Loveless.

  • She was born Patty Lee Ramey on January 4, 1957, in Pikeville, Kentucky. She was the youngest of seven children born to John and Naomie Ramey. The family lived in Elkhorn City, in eastern Kentucky, where her dad was a coal miner.
  • Her older siblings Dottie and Roger formed a singing group called The Swinging Rameys, and when Dottie got married and abandoned the band, Roger pulled in Patty as a singer. This was her first paid singing gig, for which she earned $5.
  • In 1971, Patty and her brother drove to Nashville to meet with country singer Porter Wagoner. She sang him an original song she'd composed. Wagoner loved it and introduced the 14-year-old to Dolly Parton, who showed Loveless the ropes of the Nashville scene.
  • She married Terry Lovelace in 1976. That’s where “Loveless” comes from. It’s a variation of his last name. The couple divorced in 1985.
  • In 1992, her tour was cut short when she found out that she had a leaking blood vessel on her vocal chords. She had surgery and returned to work a few months later.
